Paraphrasing is the process of restating someone else's ideas in your own words while retaining the original meaning. It is a critical defense against plagiarism in academic essays and research papers.

The 4 Methods of Academic Paraphrasing:

  1. Use of Synonyms: Replace keywords with precise contextual equivalents (e.g., "huge increase" → "substantial expansion").
  2. Change of Voice: Switch between Active and Passive voice to shift grammatical focus.
  3. Change Word Class: Convert verbs to nouns (nominalization), adjectives to adverbs, etc.
  4. Sentence Reorganization: Change clause order by starting with dependent or conditional clauses.
