What Constitutes an Academic Paragraph?
A paragraph is a coherent group of related sentences developing a single controlling idea. In academic writing, a paragraph typically spans 100-200 words and follows a disciplined structure.
The 4 Core Elements of a Unified Paragraph
1. Topic Sentence (The Anchor)
States the main point and controlling idea of the paragraph clearly, usually positioned at the beginning.Supporting Sentences (Evidence & Explanation)
Provides concrete facts, statistical data, quotations, examples, or logical reasoning supporting the topic sentence.
Unity
Every single sentence must directly relate to the controlling idea. Eliminate any digressive or irrelevant details.
Coherence & Cohesion
Ideas must flow seamlessly from one sentence to the next using pronouns, transitional linkers, and lexical repetition.
