Comment Clauses in English

Comment clauses, also known as evaluative or appraisal clauses, express the speaker's attitude, opinion or evaluation towards the content of the main clause. They can appear before or after the main clause.

The function of comment clauses is to provide an opinion, evaluation or appraisal of the situation or action expressed in the main clause. The position of the comment clause can vary depending on the intended emphasis.

There are two main types of comment clauses: Subjective and Objective.

Subjective comment clauses express the speaker's personal attitude or opinion towards the situation, action or person expressed in the main clause.

Example: "I'm happy that you passed your exam."

Objective comment clauses express a factual evaluation of the situation or action expressed in the main clause.

Example: "The cake was delicious."

Subjective and objective comment clauses are both types of subordinate clauses that add a comment or evaluation to the main clause. The difference between the two lies in their relationship to the subject of the main clause.

A subjective comment clause gives an opinion or evaluation about the subject of the main clause. It usually begins with a pronoun or adverb such as "I think," "in my opinion," or "apparently."
