Argumentative Essay Writing

Steps for Writing an Argumentation Essay

1.Review all the reading material on the subject — notes, highlighting, etc.

2. Divide the main points into those for your issue and those against your issue.

3. Write a thesis statement identifying the issue and your position.

4.Construct an outline which has the primary main ideas supporting your position and one or  two opposing arguments for refutation. Choose a pattern of organization which is logical  and convincing.

5. Outline secondary supports for each of your major points, including evidence, examples,  explanations, testimony, cause/effect, etc. and, of course, include your reference material.

6.Begin your draft. Write the body of the essay based on your outline, using your major  supports as topic sentences. Make sure that you use transitions between and within  paragraphs. Make sure that opposition arguments are stated briefly and refuted at length, so  that your reader knows you do not support the opposition's points.

7. Write your introduction. Include briefly some background information so you set the stage  for your argument. State that there is an opposition view and the main points you plan to  dispute. Give your thesis and an essay map outlining the main points in support of your  thesis.

8. Write your conclusion. Make sure you restate the main premise, present one or two  arguments which summarize your main points. Provide a general warning of the  consequences of not following your premise and/or a general statement of how the  community will benefit from following your premise.

9.Check your draft for the following:

▪ Do your paragraphs present arguments which support your main points as non-debatable  or as facts? Do you have adequate and convincing support?

▪ Do one or two of your paragraphs present arguments which oppose your main premise  as debatable and possibly untrue? Do you begin those parts with phrases such as  "opponents believe" or "some people argue," etc.?

▪ Have you clearly marked the place where you shift from the opposing to the supporting  points with such words as "however"?

▪ Do you have an introduction that draws your reader into your argument? Do you have a  conclusion which leaves the reader feeling the strength and logic of your position?

10. Revise, revise, and proofread.

Introduction

Explain the subject, the controversy, and end with your thesis. Here are some tips:

∙ Use the title to present your point of view. The title is often your thesis statement or the  question you are trying to answer.

∙ Be concise. You're only introducing your argument, not debating it.

∙ Think about your audience—what aspects of this issue would most interest or convince  them?

∙ Appeal to the reader's emotions. Readers are more easily persuaded if they can  empathize with your point of view.

∙ Present undeniable facts from highly regarded sources. This builds a lot of trust and  generally indicates a solid argument.

∙ Make sure you have a clear thesis that answers the question. The thesis should state your  position and is usually the last sentence of your introduction.

Body

The body usually consists of three or more paragraphs, each presenting a separate piece of  evidence that support your thesis. You should explain why your audience should agree with  you. Make your argument even stronger by stating opposing points of view and refuting those  points.

1. Reasons and support

∙ Usually, you will have three or more reasons why the reader should accept your  position. These will be your topic sentences.

∙ Support each of these reasons with logic, examples, statistics, authorities, or anecdotes.

∙ To make your reasons seem plausible, connect them back to your position by using  ―if…then‖ reasoning.

2. Anticipate opposing positions and arguments.

∙ What objections will your readers have? Answer them with argument or evidence.

∙ What other positions do people take on this subject? What is your reason for rejecting  these positions?

Conclusion

The conclusion in many ways mirrors the introduction. It summarizes your thesis statement  and main arguments and tries to convince the reader that your argument is the best. It ties the  whole piece together. Avoid presenting new facts or arguments.

Here are some conclusion ideas:

∙ Think "big picture." If you are arguing for policy changes, what are the implications of  adopting (or not adopting) your ideas? How will they affect the reader (or the relevant  group of people)?

∙ Present hypotheticals. Show what will happen if the reader adopts your ideas. Use real life examples of how your ideas will work.

∙ Include a call to action. Inspire the reader to agree with your argument. Tell them what  they need to think, do, feel, or believe.

∙ Appeal to the reader's emotions, morals, character, or logic.

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY EXAMPLE #1

Are People Too Dependent on Mobile Phones?

Mobile phones have become a must have in our modern society. They have become a central  application to a variety of aspects and not just regular conversations. After having been  invented as a device that would connect people while on the move, mobile phones have  become much more in the last decade. It is not possible to watch videos, listen to music, and  much more. However, there is a hint that these devices are starting to occupy much bigger  roles in our life so much to the point that mobile phone addiction has become a new section  in our dictionary.

Reason for Overwhelming Popularity

The reason behind the tremendous growth in mobile phones have been down to a reason, as  they have changed the way communication has been perceived by humans. The mobile  devices permit rapid communication in all forms and they have truly made the world a  smaller place.

Rather than just vocal communication from a couple of decades ago, it is not possible to use a  mobile device to send location, pictures, and videos. Crucially, they have become flexible in  this department with something for everyone. Mobile phones are a godsend for long-distance  relationships, while they help accomplish business tasks even when the whole mass of the  Earth is in between. Mobile devices have also become a crucial device in safety, as statistical  data reveals that Americans use mobile devices in 74% of the distress calls.

Are We Becoming Too Dependent?

The modern society has embraced mobile phones in a big way but it has come at a cost.  Today, the whole essence of socialism has been transformed into a tiny device that occupies  the palm of your hand. There is an overwhelming dependence on mobile devices even for  basic actions like knowing the time, as these mobile devices have become multifaceted.

The addiction with regard to mobile phones has become such a huge problem that people  tend to be glued to the phones even when communication is not taking place. This is because  mobile phones have become the hub for receiving entertainment at any time of the day.  Content creators push through entertainment options onto the mobile phones through a  variety of medium.

Problems Created by Excessive Mobile Phone Usage

A few years ago, ‗The World Unplugged Project‘ decided to analyze the risk of mobile  devices in our day-to-day lives. An experiment conducted to see how long an individual can  go without mobile devices ended up quite badly. Participants were asked to stay away from  the mobile devices for 24 hours and they ended up developing plenty of psychological  symptoms, while some even displayed physical problems.

The huge impact of mobile devices can be summed up with one basic action: people checking  their mobile devices for new text messages even when they have not received anything. People are subconsciously thinking only about receiving new content on the devices and it is  starting to the society quite badly.

Conclusion

The mobile devices have truly made our life much more convenient, but they have also  brought together plenty of health issues. Superficially, the mobile devices may appear to  improve the quality of life but they are slowly consuming the society as a whole. While it is  not feasible or possible to do more mobile devices from our daily life, people should start  showing more seriousness to the problem that rests in our pocket. Mobile phones have  become the medium through which anxiousness, irritability, depression, nervousness,  loneliness, frustrations, and stressfulness spreads around us. It is of paramount importance to  limit their usage.

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY EXAMPLE #2

Essay on Selfie Addiction, Is it Good or Bad?

First and foremost question is can we call it an addiction. The answer is Yes and NO. Yes,  because a person who takes selfie get a habit of repetition, finds it difficult to stop or control  it. But same time there are no medical symptoms or diagnosis available for Selfie Addiction.  ―Addiction‖ word is used here metaphorically. It means the craze, fad, mania among the  young generation, especially among teenagers.

Before understanding the advantages and disadvantages or good and bad sides of selfie  addition we need to understand what is Selfie Addiction, its origin, meaning etc.

What is a ―Selfie‖? What is its Meaning?

In short, selfies means self-portrait typically taken with a front camera of a smartphone with  hand or with help of selfie stick. The main reason one takes a selfie is to post it on famous  social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or share it WhatsApp. Sometimes  people use timers but most of the times take a selfie right away. When you take a self-portrait  with a group of friends or people it is called as ―Groupie‖. ―Selfie‖ was declared the word of  the year by Oxford English dictionary in the year 2013.

Now famous social networking platforms encourage users to take selfies. Selfie trend is used  in politics and government campaigns too. we see advertisements from various brands to take  a selfie with a loved one for this year‘s valentine day. Celebrities, politicians, adults,  illiterate, teenagers, kids everyone takes selfies and groupies now. It has reached to Space and  Mars too. Astronauts also take selfies in space and Mars Rover took a selfie on Mars. It is  becoming a staple diet for marketing strategies.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Selfie

Selfie itself is harmless to anyone, its the addiction surrounded to it can be a problem. There  are some good and some bad sides to it.

Positive Point about Selfies (Advantages)

Boosts Confidence

When people take a selfie and post it on social media they get likes and shares. It makes them  feel good about themselves. People who generally don‘t express themselves can express their  emotions through it. Introverts people find it difficult to interact with other people, selfies  give them a chance to express themselves without living their comfort zone. All in all, it can  boost the confidence of people for some time.

Capturing the Moment

People take more selfies than a typical photo, it is quick and trendy. You don‘t need a  photographer or expensive digital camera to take a photo. Seflies brings that convenience and  control. So people capture more moments in their life.

Nowadays almost every camera has a front-facing camera, there are few companies  promoting their smartphones as ―Selfie Expert‖. These smartphone makers adding built-in  filters, make it easy to share selfies directly on famous social media platforms.

Negative Points of Selfie Addiction (Disadvantages)

Every coin has two sides, though selfies in itself is a harmless thing, peoples‘ behavior  around it add negative connotations to it.

Risking Life

There are hundreds of reported deaths because of selfies. People go to dangerous places like  cliffs, sea, building tops etc to take a selfie which will give them more likes. And sometimes  accident happens. This Seflie craze is rampant in Indian teenagers. A lot of teenagers died  while taking a selfie at dangerous places.

Experience vs Photo

We find people taking selfies with food, scenery and almost everything. Rather than enjoying  the food, place or experience people prefer a selfie first. This is making subtle but a big  impact on teenagers brain, they are enjoying photo than the experience.

Competition

There is unspoken competition between friends to post a selfie which gets more likes. Peer  pressure makes them do risky things to stay ahead of the competition. If they don‘t get  expected likes over social media then they feel bad about themselves. This can lead to  depression too.

Conclusion

Is selfie good or bad? Answer totally depends on the person, not on a photo. It depends us on  us, how crazy we are for a selfie, how much importance we are giving to it. There is nothing  bad in taking selfies but one should not allow this addiction take control over our senses.

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY Example #1 (MY FAVOURITE SINGER)
I have one singer that I like the most in this world. His name is Kim Jae Joong. He is the  former group member DBSK (Dong Bang Shin Ki). This group well known as the king of K pop world. In 26 of January 1986, a baby was born in Gangju, South Korea, named Jaejoong.  He lives as a normal kid in Korea with his adoptive family including his father, mother and  eight sisters. He has been born with fair skin, small eyes and a birthmark on his neck. He is  lucky because he already has a slim body that bring him be as a talented singer in Korea.

The reason why I like him because of his unique personality. Although he stays with all his  members at home, he likes to cooks for his friends. When his friends hear a noisy sound at  the kitchen, all of them know that Jaejoong is cook at kitchen. He is a bright and talkative  person. He will start speaks when he wake up in the morning until he fall asleep. The facts  that he cannot change is he will wear eyes mask and play a loud music to make him sleeps.  He is so hilarious person and always makes jokes to cheer up his friends‘ mood. He always  says that he will happy if his friends happy. Next, he also likes to wear his ring on his forth  finger and feels uncomfortable when he wear on other fingers. He is the well-known celebrity  who likes to eat spicy food very much. In one of the television program is he ate world‘s  spiciest pepper; Naga Jolokia pepper with ease and thinks that pepper would taste good in a  dish. His members always complaining that Jaejoong only prepared foods to his members  based on his taste only. Other than that, he likes to bring along the death sauce in Japan when  he back to Korea.

The second reason why I being his fan because his career as singer. He started his career in  2001, at fifteen years old; he auditioned in S.M. Entertainment and was accepted into the  agency as a trainer. After training around two years and half, he debuted as the main vocalist  of South Korea boy band, DBSK. ―The Grace‖ for the Japanese version of their song ―Just  for one day‖ which was featured on their fifth Japanese single and their debut album,  Graceful. Besides work as a singer, scriptwriter and composer, he also has worked as an actor

in drama ―Time Slip Dr.Jin‖, ―Protect the Boss‖ and ―Postman to Heaven‖. Right now, he  opened a café in Seoul.

The last reason why I like him is hardship that he needs to face before and during his career  as singer in South Korea. At a young age, his biological mother gave him up for adoption to  Kim family and his name was changed from Jaejon to Kim Jae Joong. When he was fifteen,  he was moved to Seoul by himself in order to take part in the auditions held by SM  Entertainment. Life in Seoul proved to be hard for him and he had to take various odd jobs to  come up with the 150, 000 won needed for the room rent.

For conclusion, I as his fan from eleven years old until now; still proud of Jaejoong. He is the  best singer in South Korea that we can take as role model. His though feeling that makes he  still wake up to performs in front of his fans around the world. I hope that he will success for  his entire life.

Descriptive Essay Example #2 (Favorite Food)
Today, there are many delicious foods easily available. I sometime wonder how life was in  the ancient past when they did not have ease of access to food as we do today.

However, though I can find food of all kinds in our stores there are foods that stand out as my  favorite.

I easily walk past the pizzas, the fluffy pasties, pies, and cream cakes. But when I sit in the  restaurant and see the words oxtail stew, with creamed spinach and potatoes I positively  drool.

The Waitron places the crispy warm bread rolls beside me on a white plate. In front of me  were yellow balls of butter. Next, she placed in front of me a bowl of creamed spinach, dark  green finely cut with the white cream and steam coming from it advertising it was freshly  cooked. I inhaled the warm aroma unique to spinach. Beside it was a bowl with smooth white  mashed potato. Rich creamy smooth and firm from the butter and milk that had been beaten  into it to add to its flavor and smooth texture.

Then came the bowl full of oxtail stew. Its rich dark brown color was set off by the white  bowl it was in. The gravy was thick and rich. I could smell the aroma of beef, garlic, and  herbs and spices drifting up from it into my nose. My mouth watered in anticipation.

Now I took the silver spoon and dipped it into the bowl of potato. It smoothly penetrated the  firm fluffy white mound. I lifted the spoon and turned it over on my plate depositing a mound  of potato. I repeated this 3 times. Then using another spoon I scooped up spinach dripping  white sauce and put it on the plate beside the potato. The dark green Spinach was hot, the  white Sauce melted and it contrasted with the creamy potato. Now after a second helping of  spinach I took another larger spoon. I dipped it into the rich brown stew and stirred it. Then I  scooped up a chunky slice of oxtail. Several other pieces followed that one onto my plate, the  rich brown meat, contrasting with the dark green spinach and creamy white potato.
The succulent meat gleaming with a coating of rich gravy and the aroma of gravy, garlic spinach  and potato blending in the steam rising from my plate. I scooped up gravy from the bowl and  trickled it over the white potato catching the scent of red wine. I broke the roll and spread  butter on it and I was ready to eat.

Now the decision where to start, so I bit into the fresh crisp roll and tasted its warm soft  texture and the melting butter. By then I had decided to sample the potato with gravy and the  spinach. The potato was smooth, with a taste of butter over powered with the tangy gravy, its  garlic and hint of good red wine in it. The spinach was a good foil. Smooth with its vegetable  texture and plain white sauce it softened the taste of the gravy. Then I used my fork and  removed the succulent meat from the bone. Its soft texture, fatty feeling in the mouth, the  spice wine and garlic in the gravy made it perfect. So I sat contented at my table eating as  much as I could, and more than I should of my favourite food.

What is a CV?

∙ To really figure out what a CV is, we first have to talk about what CV means. The letters CV stand for curriculum vitae which is Latin for ―course of life.

∙ When used in a job seeking context, a CV (also sometimes referred to as just a vita) is a detailed accounting of not only a person‘s past history of education, experiences and qualifications but also related accomplishments and is generally used when an individual is looking for a job.

So basically a resume, right?

Basically…yes…but really it‘s so much more than just that.

Confused?

∙ A resume isn‘t very long.

∙ Ideally a good solid resume is about one page in length and can be submitted for  almost any type of job on the market. When you type up a resume, you‘re usually just  covering your work and educational history.

∙ You might include certain professional affiliations and possibly highlight specific  major awards that relate to the job you‘re applying for, but it‘s usually a concise  document. Short and sweet.

∙ A Curriculum Vitae on the other hand, is much longer and covers much, much more  information.

∙ A CV is a thorough and comprehensive document, detailing not only your education  and work history, but also your achievements, awards, any honors you‘ve been  conferred and any and all of your publications.

∙ Depending on how much you‘ve accomplished, the full document can range in length from two to three to ten pages, or more!

Cover Letter

1. What is a Cover Letter?

Cover letters are an essential part of a strong job application. A great one can get you  interviews even if your resume is lacking. A bad one, however, can make you look  unprofessional and completely ruin your chances of landing work.

#1. A Personality-filled Professional Document

Whereas a resume portrays your qualifications in concrete terms, your cover letter is where  you really sell yourself.

Most likely, there are other candidates out there with similar backgrounds striving to land the  same job as you. Your letter is where you can really shine, and let your personality win you  favor with the hiring manager.

#2. A Potent Partner of Your Resume

In a literal sense, cover letters are one page, highly-targeted documents (written specifically  for a single company) that you pair with your resume. When the reader finishes, they should  be chomping at the bit to have you in for an interview.

5 Reasons Why You Need a Cover Letter

Although a cover letter is brief, a good one packs a punch. If you write yours well, it can:

1. Successfully introduce you to the hiring manager

2. Make a strong case why you‘d be a good fit for the job

3. Prove your desire to work at their company in particular

4. Fill in any missing data that couldn‘t be included on your resume

5. Give the hiring manager a call to action

If you can manage to check off those five boxes, your letter can be a compelling, powerful  companion to your resume.

A Contact Information – List your info and that of your target company near the top. Try to  avoid typos.

B The “Intro” Paragraph – Grab the reader‘s attention. Introduce yourself, & state why  you‘re a good fit.

C The “Hard Sell” Paragraph – Prove how qualified you are. Use bullet points to highlight  achievements.

D The “Research” Paragraph – Learn about your target company, & explain how you fit  into their future.

E The “Action” Paragraph – Let the hiring manager know what times you‘re available to  interview. Mention you‘ll follow up with them if necessary.

F The Sign-off – Any of ―Sincerely,‖ ―Regards,‖ ―Best Regards,‖ and your name should do  the trick.

Letter of Request

Sample Letter Asking for Favor

Dear George,

As you know, my truck has been acting up quite a bit recently. I took it to the mechanic, and  he said that it is in dire need of a tune-up; however, it will cost almost $400 to get all of the  work done. He said that if I had a friend who was knowledgeable about it, it would probably  be worth buying the parts myself and having them help.

So, I‘m writing because I know that you are very handy and enjoy tinkering with cars. Would  you be willing to let me borrow your tools and help me get my truck tuned up? It would  really help me out and save me a good amount of money.

I would be happy to compensate you for your time and I will, of course, buy all of the  necessary parts. Let me know what would be appropriate for compensation. I really  appreciate the fact that I can come to you for this. You are a great friend.

Sincerely,

Martin

▪ Request information about a product

I saw your advertisement introducing the Doe 600 Plus in the Springfield Journal of June 10.  I think your system may be just what our company needs. Please send me more information  on the 600 plus or other systems that may be appropriate for our needs. We have 90  employees and run our plant 24 hours per day, six days a week.

You could mail the information to me at the above address, or call me at 555-5555. ▪ Request for an Official Document

I am writing to request a copy of my graduation certificate awarded in the spring  commencement services. Unfortunately, I lost the original when my briefcase was stolen  from my car. I am enclosing a copy of the police report to support my claim, along with a  certified check for $27.50 to cover the replacement fee. My name and other identifying  information are included in the report. Please send the certificate to the address below. Thank  you for your assistance.

▪ Request correction of a Billing Error

I wish to register a complaint regarding the $5.00 charge on my phone bill from Doe Long Distance Companies. Since Doe is not my long distance carrier and to my knowledge has  never provided me with any services whatsoever, I have requested that my bank stop the  automatic payment on my phone bill. I am enclosing a check for the remaining $57.49 that I  owe, and I request that you remove the Doe charge from my account.

Since this is not the first time I have received a charge from Doe, please investigate this error  and inform me of the steps you are taking to avoid this problem in the future.

▪ Request a Raise of a Promotion

I have been employed by your company for over three years now, and I am sure you would  agree that I have become a valuable asset in the computer programming department. During  my tenure here, I have provided you with unwavering loyalty and have been committed to  working above and beyond the responsibilities of my position. I have also used the full range  of my capabilities to help make your organization the successful enterprise it is today. My  professionalism is above reproach and my performance record speaks for itself. Routinely, I  have taken the initiative to seek out additional work assignments, and you have always been  able to count on me to get the job done right.

With that being said, I want to take this opportunity to request a promotion and its  accompanying raise. I believe I have proven myself to be a loyal and dependable employee  who really deserves a promotion and a raise. The financial compensation and greater  challenges this would provide would make me feel that I have made an important  advancement in my career. I know that you will understand that if you allow me the  opportunity to spread my wings beyond my present boundaries, I can provide even greater  service to this company.

I ask you to seriously consider my request. I suggest that we sit down together and discuss the  matter further. That way we could examine how granting this request would not only benefit  me personally, but the company's success and financial growth as well.

▪ Complain About a Billing Error

On January 23 I had my 2018 Oldsmobile serviced in your Springfield Lubrication Center,  and charged it to my Doe credit card. I have just received my credit card statement and notice  that the charge appears twice on the same date. I remember the technician having problems  with the computer, so I assume the double-billing was the result of some mistake at that time.

I am enclosing a copy of my bill. I believe the best way to correct the problem would be for  you to credit my card account with the amount charged for the service. If you will handle this  problem immediately, I think everything will be okay. Thank you.

▪ Complain About Harassment

I understand that my payment is three weeks late, but that does not justify your collections  office's actions. During the past five days I have received three telephone calls and four  letters. In addition, one of your representatives has contacted three of my relatives who have  nothing to do with my finances. By anyone's definition this is harassment. I expect you to  stop contacting me every day and to stop calling my relatives.

In the meantime, please know that I plan to send you a payment within the next few days.  The money will reach your office in about a week.

▪ Complain About Poor Service or a Faulty Product

Last September we purchased one of your five-gallon water distillers from your Springfield  distributor, John Doe. We find now that the holding chamber has a leak where the stainless  steel sections come together, and it loses water almost as fast as it distills it.

Since John Doe has moved to another state, I turn to you to honor the lifetime guarantee on  this unit. I am returning this part of the distiller for a replacement. Enclosed is a copy of the  warranty and my registration number. I understand that I incur no costs with this exchange. I  appreciate your service.
