Understanding the Communication Cycle
Communication is a dynamic, transactional process wherein meaning is encoded, transmitted across a channel, received, decoded, and validated through feedback.
The 7 Fundamental Components of Communication
- Sender (Source): The originator who conceives the message.
- Encoding: Translating thoughts into symbolic representations (words, gestures).
- Message: The verbal or non-verbal content being communicated.
- Channel (Medium): The conduit (spoken word, email, video, letter).
- Receiver: The intended recipient who decodes the message.
- Decoding: Interpreting symbols to derive subjective meaning.
- Feedback: The response indicating whether the message was understood accurately.
Overcoming Communication Barriers (Noise)
Noise is any interference that distorts message fidelity:
- Physical Noise: Loud surroundings, poor acoustics, technical glitches.
- Psychological Noise: Prejudice, anger, stress, lack of attention.
- Semantic Noise: Ambiguous jargon, cultural idiomatic mismatch.
- Physiological Noise: Hearing impairments, fatigue, illness.
