An essay is basically an extended piece of writing based around a topic. It can be about anything you want, but the aim is to make people think, and to encourage them to discuss ideas with one another and to challenge their own opinions. Writing an effective essay doesn't necessarily require any special skills; however, knowing how to structure the essay effectively does mean that you'll be able to get the best results out of yourself. Here's everything you need to know about how to write an essay easily so you're ready to start writing.

Thesis statement

A thesis statement is what starts off the essay, and sets out what you intend to prove throughout the rest of the paper. Before you even begin writing the essay, decide on the main point you'll be making, and then use this to create a good thesis statement. You might have several points you'll be trying to prove within the essay, but only one main idea to focus on at first. An example of a thesis statement would be "The purpose of the essay is to highlight the importance of being environmentally friendly."

Structure

Once you've decided on your thesis statement, you'll now need to break down the rest of the essay into smaller pieces. Think of each section as having its own 'topic' within the larger essay, and make sure that each topic is related to the main idea. These sections can be split up into paragraphs - these should help you to keep track of where you are going with the various parts of the essay. Each paragraph should have its own sub-heading, and these subheadings should relate back to the main idea of each paragraph. If you add in some additional supporting material, this will help both yourself and your readers to understand exactly what you're talking about. Make sure that the supporting information is relevant to the topic, though. If you just throw in random facts without relating them to the topic, you won't be proving much of anything.

Paragraph planning

Think about how you want the different parts of the essay to flow together. Will they be starting off with a general overview before moving onto the details? Or will you jump straight in with the details? Whatever approach you wish to take, make sure that you stick to it. Don't go jumping between topics or tangents unless you have a really strong argument to back up your claims!

Writing style

You don't need to try to sound clever or academic when you're writing an essay. In fact, using long words and complex sentences isn't always a good thing; instead, keep things simple and clear. Avoid jargon and make sure your grammar is correct. Also remember that if you use slang words, you may not impress your teacher or audience. However, if you do use slang, make sure that you explain the meaning of those words clearly.

IntroductionMost people who have never written an academic paper before do not know where to start. You need to get the introduction right first otherwise you won’t have a chance at getting anywhere. In fact, the introduction should always be the most important section of any piece of writing. A good introduction makes sure that the reader knows what they are about to read. An introduction may be short or long depending on how much information you have to give to make the point clear. So, if you are using a lot of details and examples then you should probably make the introduction longer than if you are only giving basic points. When writing down your introduction, remember that you don’t have to use big words and long sentences. Just keep it simple and direct. If you want to get a quick idea of how to write a good introduction, just check out some examples below.

BodyThe body is basically where everything else happens. So, it is no surprise that this is the most important section. Try to make sure that you introduce each topic clearly, and that you try to cover everything that you want to talk about. You should also make sure that you link previous topics to the current one as well as making sure that you finish off each section effectively. Remember that the body is divided into paragraphs and each paragraph should be around three lines in length. Keep the ideas flowing and remember that you don”t necessarily have to stick to one subject throughout the whole paper. That would definitely be boring!

ConclusionIn this final section, you need to bring all the things together. This means that you should be summarizing all the points that you have mentioned earlier. Make sure that you take into account all the mistakes that you have made along the way, and think of ways to improve them. Also, you should explain what you learnt from the whole experience. Finally, think about whether or not what you have done was actually worthwhile. There is nothing worse than having wasted time doing something that wasn’t worth it.
